Public access sequence databases, such as GenBank, EMBL, and DDBJ, have been growing at exponential rates. This deluge of information has necessitated the careful storage, organization, indexing of sequences, and processing sequence data. Bioinformatics or computational biology is the use of techniques from applied mathematics, informatics, statistics, and computer science to process or mine those biological sequence data. Major research efforts in the field include sequence alignment, gene finding, genome assembly, protein structure alignment, protein structure prediction, prediction of gene expression and protein-protein interactions, and the modeling of evolution.
In Biotechnology Center, we have dedicated computing faciliites and softwares for manipulating and processing biological data. Recently, The Bioinformatics and Information Science Center (BISC) was created in Western. The establishment of this center will build an interdisciplinary faculty and student community to collaboratively solve problems in bioinformatics and information science. We belive this center will enhance or boost our capability in computational biology. In order to help members and students, we introduce all commerical bioinformatics softwares that are available to biotech center, but also built a Bioinformatics Links whcih link to major molecular resources, tools and databases. All of the linked resources are free. Hopefully, this bioinformatics links can benefits your research.
